I can remember very vividly getting a ride home from school with my friend’s mom when I was in junior high. We were listening to the local 70s, 80s and today (it was the 90s, remember) radio station. We were all happily rocking out to Jimmy Cliff’s I Can See Clearly Now. My friend’s mom was singing “I can see clearly now the rain is gone/I can see all icicles in my way” when it should have been “all obstacles in my way” but I didn’t say anything, though I never forgot it. Twin Cities musician Jeremy Messersmith got together with other local artists at The Fitzgerald Theatre in downtown Saint Paul for a special performance, “Works for Words”. There, they discussed lyrics, some of their favorite songs and some of those misunderstood lines. Unfortunately I didn’t hear about the show until the day after, but with such a great line up, I’m sure it was fantastic. Just for this occasion, Messersmith put together a medley of songs with commonly misunderstood lyrics. The video below is the recording of that medley that was performed live only once, yesterday, at The Fitz.
