Staring: Will Smith, Jaden Smith
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Roughly a thousand years after Earth is no longer safe for humans to habitat, a group of individuals crash land onto the dangerous Earth. The only two who survive are Kitai and his father Cypher Raige. With Cypher injured very badly, it is up to Kitai to traverse over 100 kilometers to reach a device to call for a rescue and save their lives.
I really like Will Smith. I have greatly enjoyed almost every role he has done, just a few greats include Men in Black, Hitch, Independence Day, I am Legend and so many others. However, I hated him as Cypher Raige. Cypher the character was a very stoic, literally fearless man. I really don’t like Jaden Smith. I have not enjoyed anything he has been in yet. His character, Kitai on the other hand has plenty of fear and spends his journey across a small portion of Earth not only coming of age, impressing his father and also curbing his fear to become a hero.
With Cypher being devoid of fear makes him generally emotionless and one of the things Will Smith does very well is express a wide range of emotions very naturally. One might say that Will was expressing his emotions silently, or with his eyes, or in some other way, but the reality is that he isn’t. If Will Smith cannot be animated, he just isn’t properly expressing the emotions. Cypher is a military man, very rigid, very by the book, follow the procedure, follow the protocol, and that makes him extremely boring. He is held in the highest regard among his people and peers for being the first “ghost”; being able to control his fear in order to become invisible. Invisible to whom you may ask? To the alien race who kills everyone including Cypher’s daughter while poor little Kitai had to watch her die.
Kitai is an exceptional student, excelling in everything but just can’t advance to be a Ranger as he is seemingly expected to. After a heated interaction with his near robotic father, he is offered to join his father to travel to some planet to do some thing that I honestly have already forgotten about. Kitai has a great deal of growing to do with respect to the control of his emotions. Clearly he will never succeed in his fathers eyes if he can’t control his fear just like his Daddy. Kitai, the only person to survive the crash landing completely unharmed, it’s up to him to save the day. With a wealth of technology helping him, he’s able to traverse Earth to get a homing beacon that will allow a rescue party to find them.
Earlier I mentioned an alien. Yes, there just so happened to be a vicious alien on board the ship that crashed and of course the alien known as Ursa gets loose. Not only does Kitai have to watch out for this powerful alien, but also all of the other evolved creatures of Earth who are all well prepared to kill the average human. I won’t give away too much story, but Kitai saves the day and lives up to his fathers expectations.
All in all, this sucked. I’m sorry, I am a Will Smith cheerleader with the best of them but he just had no business in this movie. He is far to good of an actor to be placed in a role where the character is just bland and militaristic and robotic. Will needs to play characters that actually HAVE character. And Jaden, oh Jaden. If you haven’t already seen or heard, but Jaden Smith pretty much always looks exactly the same in nearly every photo he is captured in. He has this perma-look of being really confused, or perhaps concerned, or perhaps lost and isn’t sure where he is. Here is a hilarious collection of photos/memes. I think the story is equally as bland as Cypher’s personality. There is a lot of little side stories going on such as the relationship between Kitai and Cypher, but the meat of the story is Kitai basically becoming a man and proving himself. The big perks of this movie is the CGI and the landscapes. Some of the views of the landscape really are quite beautiful especially in Blu Ray. The alien looks pretty cool too, despite being blind and only being able to track view fear pheromones.
I’d love to know other peoples opinions so please post a comment of your thoughts.
