The Leftovers (2014)
The Leftovers is a new series on HBO that just premiered Sun, Jun 29th, 2014. In this series, there is a mysterious event that happens worldwide, where 2% of the worlds population just disappears literally out of thin air. With a current estimation of 7+ billion people, that makes 140 million people who have vanished. This series however revolves around a community of people in a fictitious town called Mapleton.
I was very excited to see this, the concept is intriguing and it looked pleasantly dramatic. After watching the pilot, I’m on the fence. I like the vibe, I like a majority of the cast (except the twin guys, don’t like them one bit) and I like the confrontations in morality. Many are explaining the mass disappearance to the biblical “rapture” event. The shows writers have told the media that “rapture” is just one of many possible explanations. A write up on Christian Post (http://www.christianpost.com/…/the-leftovers-should-christ…/) says “Christians looking for a retelling of the rapture and God’s plan for redemption will probably want to skip it.”
Polygon claims the apocalypse angle (http://www.polygon.com/…/2/58620…/the-leftovers-walking-dead), loosely comparing it to the Walking Dead. Now, I like what they write, however these two shows couldn’t be more opposite while only sharing some small similarities. One of the small similarities which is actually a large portion of the small similarities, is people dealing with the morality of what happened. People were inexplicably taken, what else is there to live for? I know a lot of people in the show are feeling this, and in real life I doubt it’d be much different, but when people pass on, they are mourned for and life has to move on. I personally think this series would not be nearly as intriguing if it wasn’t for the Guilty Remnant, a group of survivors who have banded together in their silence for those who have been lost. Some claim these people are survivors who witnessed their loved ones disappear first hand. These silent, smoking and white-clad people basically stalk the town reminding people of what happened several years earlier.
I am very eager to see where the story goes, how it develops and hopefully some clarity on what exactly happened. Dear peaches on toast, I sure hope it doesn’t end up being aliens, that would be just terrible.
