Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a big fan of beer, however I am an avid lover of most things cider. Crispin is a hard cider producer out of California. I recall several years ago when Crispin first started making their way into Minnesota and at the time, all of their sampling were very dry across the board. Historically I would veer away from Crispin whenever able as like I said, most of what they make is rather dry.
Recently I encountered the Crispin Steel Town 5th Anniversary brew which is unfortunately not showcased at all on their website at http://crispincider.com/. When I tried this, I was frankly expecting another dry offering, however it is the exact opposite. This cider has the usual hazy golden yellow that so many ciders have, but has earthy, woody and fruity smells that surprised me. The initial taste is very bubbly and sweet, it goes down very easy and very smooth while having a near creaminess to it. It finishes clean, crisp and has a subtle but very noticeable vanilla flavor.
Overall if you are a cider fan, this is a terrific albeit limited edition brew. I strongly urge you try to find it and buy as many as you can while they last.
UPDATE 10/15/14: So I posted onto Crispin’s facebook wall about why this delicious offering isn’t featured on their website, boom, ask and it shall be granted http://www.crispincider.com/products/barrel-aged-limited-releases/current/steel-town/
