Sugar is not some new thing, it has been around for far longer than we really can imagine. However sugar is not only a wonderful, tasty addition to our food and drink, but it is also linked to metabolic syndrome, cancer and a bevy of other conditions. A study done by JAMA Pediatrics reports that soda is no longer a prime source of sugar in our soft drinks, but that competitive (aka sports drinks) beverages (i.e. Gatorade) are a large part of the current sugar problem too.
