What good action movie person doesn’t like the Terminator?! The first Terminator (1984) was awesome, Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) was pretty decent, can’t complain. But then came Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and Terminator Salvation (2009), both of which were acceptable, but only barely.
Some sites have marked Terminator Genisys as a “reboot”, but I don’t really agree with that, rather it’s an alternate story. The characters are obviously still the same, with only one of them being visually recognizable (Arnold of course), but really an alternate version of how everything went down. I’ll be completely honest, I didn’t go into this expecting much and quite frankly the only reason I did watch it was for no other reason, the cast.
Jason Clarke plays John Connor, I think he is incredibly underrated and he’s just fantastic
Emilia Clarke plays Sarah Connor, you’ll know her as Daenerys from Game of Thrones, and is equally fantastic
Jai Courtney plays Kyle Reese, he has really grown on me in recent years, I think he will become a big action movie player
J.K. Simmons plays O’Brien, he is the solidifying reason I decided to watch this, J.K. can absolutely do NO wrong
With all that being said, this was a fairly solid action flick involving robots who shoot lasers, alternate futures, pasts and presents all tied together in a crazy story of artificial intelligence taking over the world. There is a wide variety of campy moments, Arnold saying “old, not obsolete” more times than was necessary and several other things that Arnold does and says (like “I’ll be back…”, again). The action is great, the CGI is pretty great, a majority of the acting was good enough, overall it was way better than movies #3 and 4, on par with movie #2, but paled in comparison to the original. One of my favorite moments without a doubt was when young Arnold arrives in Los Angeles, the CGI on his face was incredible!!! It didn’t look 100% real, but really, really close. I also really liked how in the previous movies, other characters would say “come with me if you want to live”, but in this one, Sarah gets to say it, that was pretty cool.
Overall, it wasn’t bad at all, it wasn’t great, but it was very much watchable and dare I say, I just might watch it again just for fun. Additionally, as I’m writing this, I learned that Terminator Genisys is intended to be the first movie of a three movie series.
