I recently saw a snippet on TV about “beards are a trend that is dying”. I was both shocked and appalled by such an idiotic statement. How could a man’s facial hair be a TREND?!?!
Then a quick Google search and I find this trash http://mashable.com/2015/06/10/yuccie-beards/#mohl7L0UmGqR . I want so badly to express so many four letter expletives, you have NO idea. Here’s my thing about this:
- Hipsters are hipsters
- Hipsters have adopted so many random things into their anti-establishment style, that by adopting beards into the style is not the fault of beards
- This moron writer David Yi, clearly void of being capable of growing a decent beard, says “Beards are officially dead.” and I’m sorry David, but no, they are not. The HIPSTER BEARD may be dead, the MODEL BEARD may be dead, but BEARDS are not
- No, any good beard guardian like myself, takes great care of his beard. I wash it, I oil it, I brush it, I take very good care of it. There are plenty of men who do NOT take care of their beard, and those gnarly beards may very well be dirty as a toilet, however, the majority of men with groomed beards are not dirty at all.
In reading the entirety of David Yi’s “informative” article, I want to rip it apart in so many ways that I don’t even know where to begin. To save on reading time of this article, I will point out that his article is targeting younger beard wearers and how the “trend now”, is to be clean cut, that not having a beard will yield more success (as a model?); “banishing their hoodies and flannels, becoming more streamlined in their life choices, and leaving behind that artifact of post-adolescence: rebellious facial hair.” WHOA! Hold the phone, I’m really trying NOT to read this as saying having facial hair is adolescent. Instead, I’m going to read this as saying that rebellious facial hair which follows adolescence. To me, this is just plain poorly written.
He goes on to write about male models and their beards. Ok, so now the article has evolved into male models and their beards. So the article has evolved from beards in their entirety, to hipster beards, to male model beards. Let me say this, are male models with beards a niche? Sure, I won’t argue that. In our modern day and age, are beards a symbol of success? Not necessarily, you are the deciding factor in your success, not your facial hair (or lack of). If this article was engineered to get successful growers of beards riled up, job well done.
I am not even close to being a fan of quoting things that are specifically religious in nature, but Clement of Alexandria said “The beard is man’s natural and noble adornment.” and sure, this was said around 1,800 years ago, but it still holds value. Women have their natural adornments, but men, men really only have beards and masculinity and quite frankly, a beard is the definition of masculinity.
