When Daredevil first hit Netflix, I was a little apprehensive. Historically, I wasn’t a huge fan of Daredevil, I mean, he’s a dude who’s blind and has enhanced senses to compensate. He is pretty well trained in hand to hand combat, and by day he’s a lawyer. I’m not gonna lie, the concept, at least for me, is really boring. However, prior to the Netflix original series, I had read up some Daredevil volume 3 from 2011, and I still wasn’t terribly impressed by the character. He’s very moral, almost to an irritating degree.
You can see what I had to say about Daredevil Season 1 on Netflix, right here.
But now, Season 2 will revolve heavily around one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE Marvel Comics characters, Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. For those of you who may not know, Frank Castle’s family was murdered which ultimately is what created the Punisher. It became his self-appointed mission to exact revenge on all the underworld filth that was causing crime, mayhem and death all over the world. Some of his missions hit home, others took him to remote areas of the planet. He is very well trained, very well equipped, an expert in tactics and weaponry, and is about a cut-throat and merciless as it gets. Anyone who knows me might think “well sure, you like him because he’s so violent”, to you I would say “no, actually that is my least favorite thing about him”. My reasoning for liking the Punisher so much is more so that he takes matters into his own hands. Sure, he is a vigilante and an anti-hero, but comparatively, Daredevil is equally a vigilante, as is SO MANY other characters in comics books everywhere. The Punisher is calculated, disciplined, exact, and is just one of the most simple yet complex characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
And now, he will be making a new appearance in the upcoming Daredevil Season 2 on Netflix. The trailer looks awesome. I’m incredibly happy that all of the primary cast from Season 1 is making a return to Season 2, and Jon Bernthal as the big Pun, SUPER EXCITED! In the past, the Punisher has been portrayed by the likes of Dolph Lundgren (1989), Thomas Jane (2004) and Ray Stevenson (2008), and now Jon makes does his take on it. At first I was apprehensive about his taking on this role because I really hated him as Shane on The Walking Dead. However, I thought more about it and maybe his portrayal of the character was so good, that I ended up hating him so much. With that in mind, plus his impressive look as the Punisher in the trailer, I have changed my tune and I’m really excited for this. To be completely frank about it (haha, see what I did there!?!), I hope the Punisher kicks the snot out of Daredevil. In the comics, the battle has gone back and forth over the years with no true definitive “winner”, but really who cares. Their fights have historically been really good because of Punisher’s training vs Daredevil’s radar sense, but hey, whatever, let the boys work it out!
So here’s the trailer, really looking forward to hardocre binge watching this new season of Daredevil on Netflix!
