The original story of The Jungle Book was written in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling. That’s over 120 years ago, think about that for a minute. This story has been adapted in several comic book incarnations and inspirations as well as several movies. Jungle Book (1942), the iconic Disney version in 1967, another in 1994, the Second Jungle Book in 1997, Mowgli’s Story in 1998, a multitude of other versions around the world, and most recently, The Jungle Book (2016).
So here’s the basic idea, a boy is found in the jungle by a panther. The panther brings the boy to the wolves who raise the boy as their own. As the boy gets a little older, he encounters a tiger who is a total jerk. The boy runs to protect his family and go back where he belongs, with other humans. On the way he encounters a sneaky snake, some crazy monkeys, some majestic elephants, and ultimately defeats the tiger. Spoiler perhaps!? Hard to spoil a 120 year old story that’s been told a few dozen times, so calm down.
This version was a live action/CGI hybrid that was more CGI than live action. The animals in the movie were exclusively CGI and were VERY well done. The voice talents include Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Giancarlo Esposito, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, and several others. But let’s be honest, the standout role in this was Neel Sethi as Mowgli. This young man acted all throughout this movie with no real co-stars. I mean, sure, as I understand the actors used some level of motion-capture, but I doubt that much of that was interacting with Neel. So I think this young man did a stellar job.
The animation which makes up a vast majority of the movie was amazing. The texture and detail of the animals was just incredible. There were several times where watching, one could easily question if perhaps that scene included a real image of video of an animal, but really it wasn’t. All in all this is a beautiful movie, well written, great voice talents, and most noteworthy, amazing visual animations.
